TORONTO - The CBC has issued an apology and retraction for posting a controversial online column by freelancer Heather Mallick about Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin earlier this month.
Following 300-plus complaints from readers, and attacks from Canadian and American media organizations, including Fox News, publisher John Cruickshank said the public broadcaster had erred in its editorial judgement and the item should never have appeared on the CBC website.
In an online statement, Cruickshank said reaction to the column has caused the CBC to install new editing procedures that will ensure inappropriate work won't appear.
"We are open to contentious reasoned argument but not to partisan attack," he said in a statement posted on the broadcaster's website.
"I think our party has got into a mess on the environment. As a practical matter of politics, nobody knows what (Kyoto) is or what it commits us to." Michael Ignatieff

CBC Apologizes for Mallick Smear
The CBC has apologized for the hateful attack by Heather Mallick on Alaska Governor and VP candidate Sarah Palin.
Yeah, right. Until the next time.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly.
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason in this day and age for Canada to have a government funded broadcasting network.
Let's save over $1 Billion per year. Eliminate the CBC.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
ReplyDeleteIts time for the CBC to go. Just close it down, retire the name and sell off the assets and auction-off the broadcast bandwidth. If the "journalists" can find new jobs, great. If they can't its a reflection of their lack of any kind of journalistic capability.
The "apology" was so timid as to be laughable. More of a slap on the wrist than a real admonishment of Mallick.
