A new climate change champion?

Dr. Tim Ball & Tom Harris note that "among average Americans, fears of climate change Armageddon is anything but universal" and propose that Telling the truth about global warming offers Romney support from a vast constituency

With Senator John McCain so firmly entrenched in the alarmist camp, this would seem to offer a significant opportunity to McCain’s only serious rival, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

Romney has done the best job among candidates in avoiding the use of environmental extremist language. However, his opposition to schemes such as the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act has been based only on economics, particularly the colossal trade disadvantage such legislation would impose on the U.S.

While Romney’s argument is correct as far as it goes – imposing draconian carbon dioxide restrictions on the US while 4/5th of the world’s population who live in developing countries continue to industrialize without such limits would indeed ship jobs and wealth overseas – this point is not sufficient. Most conscientious Americans want to do their part to help address serious global problems. By explaining that human-induced climate change is trivial, or at least highly speculative, Romney has the opportunity to sway many more Republicans, and eventually Americans of all political persuasions, to support his presidential bid.

Environmental extremism

The UN's Climate Change Numbers Hoax

Tom Harris writes that that the IPCC must come clean on the real numbers of scientist supporters of their position on anthropogenic global warming:

It’s an assertion repeated by politicians and climate campaigners the world over – ‘2,500 scientists of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) agree that humans are causing a climate crisis’.

But it’s not true. And, for the first time ever, the public can now see the extent to which they have been misled. As lies go, it’s a whopper. Here’s the real situation.

Shame on the CBC

Dr. Tim Ball & Tom Harris have written a four five part series published by Canada Free Press titled "CBC’s continuing denial of the climate science debate". Here's an excerpt:

Like the network itself, The Fifth Estate has violated its own mandate with ‘The Denial Machine’

The CBC television programme, “The Fifth Estate”, describes its raison d’ etre as follows:

“to challenge assumptions and question conventional wisdom, and most importantly to give voice to victims of injustice who deserve to be heard but have been silenced.”

But what if The Fifth Estate itself is the perpetrator of the injustice? What if it is their own network that has ignored and mistreated those who disagree with “conventional wisdom” on an issue of national importance? Will the programme then “challenge assumptions” on which fashionable views are based? Or will they simply parrot political correctness, carefully ignoring, or denigrating the opinions of those who spend their lives studying the field?

If the past year’s repeated broadcasts of The Denial Machine (aired for at least the 15th time on October 28th on CBC TV) is any indication, then the answer to these questions are obvious--when it comes to climate change, the Fifth Estate is not even remotely interested in questioning conventional wisdom or even following basic journalistic ethics. They are climate campaigners--state-funded propagandists, pure and simple. And, as is usually the case with partisan activists, the ends apparently justifies the means in their eyes, no matter how disreputable.

My (Tim Ball’s) own experience with Fifth Estate staff is a case in point.

Harris responds to attacks

Tom Harris responds to criticism from a letter writer in the Owen Sound Sun Times.

I certainly hope Queen's University professor John Smol insists that his student Kyle McIver is more careful and considerate in his studies than he is in his activism ("Credibility of authors of climate change article questioned", letter, May 15).

Careful, because much of what McIver says is either groundless or entirely misleading. Considerate, because a quick phone call to either Dr. Ball or myself (our phone numbers are prominent on nrsp.com) would have revealed that much of what passes for "fact" on the Web about us is simply fabricated by people who seem bent on discrediting us. That McIver would regurgitate what amounts to rumour and innuendo without engaging in basic fact checking is most unfortunate.

[...] aside from self-evident statements such as "the science of climate change is real," he makes no reference to the vitally important science presented in our article; he merely engages in ad hominem attacks against us. The climate change issue is far too important for advocates of differing points of view to resort to such base tactics.

This "shoot the messenger" strategy of the climate alarmists has been going on far too long. I'm glad to see such a well stated rebuttal. Well done, Mr. Harris. Well done.

Witnesses in a legal trial are sometimes compelled to answer questions that have little or nothing to do with the subject they are testifying on in order to determine whether or not their word can be trusted in the absence of incontrovertible, corroborating evidence. If it can be shown that the witness is a liar, then the veracity of their testimony can, and should, be called into question.

Which brings me to the subject of David Suzuki.

Asking the right questions about climate change

Adherents to the hypothesis of human-caused climate catastrophe were given a free ride from a public relations perspective in 2006. Despite the truly apocalyptic visions of Al Gore, David Suzuki and the Sierra Club, doomsters were rarely challenged to back up their claims with hard science. Everything from sea level rise to droughts, melting ice caps and drowning polar bears were blamed on global warming brought on by man's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Alternative climate science viewpoints were carefully screened out of government pronouncements and few in the public seemed to even notice. Oprah Winfrey summed up society's general naiveté about climate change when she concluded her December 5th interview of Gore, gushing, "Thank you for being our Noah!"

However exciting such an approach may be, it is time for Canadians to get real. Climate change is not a religion, or at least it shouldn't be – it is science and like all science is subject to questioning and constant revision based on what scientists actually discover. And what is being discovered is taking us further away from any sort of consensus that human-produced CO2 is a major cause of global climate change.
